Corkbeg Advance In FAI Junior Cup

Corkbeg welcomed Castleview (MSL) to Whitegate on Saturday afternoon in the FAI Junior Cup.

Corkbeg started the better of the two sides
and created an early chance through Shane Bennett, when he headed narrowly wide from a Daragh O Mahony cross. Castleview’s keeper was called into action on the 22nd minute, as he produced a point-blank save to deny Bennett from close range.

Castleview created a chance or two themselves, with their number 9 having two efforts narrowly miss the target.

Up the other end, once again, Corkbeg were creating opportunities, this time Tariq Tynan heading over from a Jordan Tynan cross. Jordan Tynan, himself, had an effort deflected wide for a corner. However, the resulting corner was cleared only as far as Jordan Ryan, who found Tariq in space, where he then let the ball run across his body, before rifling a shot into the back of the net to open the scoring.

Shortly after the interval, Jordan Tynan should’ve made it two nil but he failed to hit the target from close range. Castleview could’ve easily levelled the proceedings on the 50th minute, when a great switch of play, saw their number 9 in acres of space at the back post, but somehow he failed to hit the target, driving the shot over the crossbar.

Up the opposite end, Castleview were made to pay for that miss, as Jordan Tynan buried an effort into the bottom right corner to give the home side a two goal advantage.

Aaron Berry went close on the hour mark, but he was denied by the away side’s keeper. On the 65th minute mark, Shane Bennett was taken down inside the box, resulting in a penalty being awarded. Up stepped Kieron Murphy, and he made no mistake as he sent the keeper the wrong way to make it 3-0.

Castleview nearly pulled one back shortly after, when a cross to the back post was met with a ferocious volley, but it cannoned back off the post and safety into Chris Smith’s hands. Substitute, Jamie O Hanlon, wrapped up the game with only a couple of minutes to go, with a tidy finish into to the top corner from 20 yards.

It finished 4-0, and Corkbeg safely into the next round. Next week, it’s cup action again, as we are away to Grattan Utd in the AOH Cup.
